Common questions
What does an ecological assessment involve?
An ecological assessment characterises the plants, habitats and ecological sensitivity of a site, then sets out the likely effects of a proposed development and practical ways to avoid or reduce them. The findings are written to inform decisions and to meet regulatory requirements.
When do I need a specialist ecologist or a botanical survey?
A specialist input is typically needed when a site may support sensitive vegetation, protected species or wetlands, or when an environmental authorisation calls for a botanical or terrestrial ecology study. Early screening is the cheapest way to find out.
Which areas do you work in?
MH Ecological Consultants is based in Cape Town and works across the Western Cape and South Africa, with selected international restoration and survey projects.
How long does a survey or assessment take?
Timelines depend on site size, season and the study required. Screening reports are quick; seasonal botanical surveys may need to span the right flowering window. We scope timing clearly at the outset.
Do you help with permits and wetland delineation?
Yes — services include wetland delineation, flora removal permit support, and alien invasive species surveys and management plans, alongside impact assessment and restoration planning.
What makes a good restoration plan?
A restoration plan that works is specific to the vegetation type and disturbance history, pairs alien clearance with targeted re-establishment, and sets clear, monitorable targets — written to be implemented, not shelved.
